Majority of people start doing powerpoint presentation with two steps:
1. They insert a new slide
2. They delete standard text placeholders.
Besides that, they usually know how to insert images, text and that's all.
We've met a lot of people working for large international companies who constantly make presentations, but haven't explored PowerPoint features further than that.

Professional PowerPoint Designer can rewrite texts on slides and give a good feedback regarding client's speech. To develop this skill it is useful to analyze some of the TED`s greatest talks and to give onstage speech on your own.
When you have an experience of being onstage with slides, it is possible to get into the clients' shoes and create awesome PowerPoint presentation for them.

— For a presentation sent via email, PDF format suits best (with file size below 10 Mb).
— For live speeches, PPTX format is preferable, as you can insert animations and videos on slides.
If a deck will be shown on a plasma screen, laptop or modern projector, the slide size should be widescreen (16:9). For old projectors and iPads — 4:3.

If your client uses the deck for commercial purposes, then he has to buy images separately from the deck. Or you can use free alternatives such as Creative Commons Zero graphics (you can find some of the useful websites in this article) when creating the presentation.

A lot of graphic designers prefer to make graphics in Photoshop or Illustrator and then paste it into the PowerPoint as non-editable images. However, due to this approach, the client cannot change any of the graphics (colors, delete elements, etc).
This approach makes life harder for the client. All the text, preferably icons and other graphics should be made editable in PowerPoint.

Alignment is one of the fundamental principle of design. It is easy to distinguish beginner from professional PowerPoint designer by alignments. Use guides or alignment tools in PowerPoint to align everything fast.

PowerPoint is claimed to have messy interface and unclear logic. And Slide Master is one of the trickiest thing to learn in PowerPoint.
However, a lot of international companies incorporate brand guidelines into Slide Master to develop a consistency in presentations across the departments and regions. So it is quite useful to become a Master of Slide Master =)
