We are Reprezent
When working with text, PowerPoint (Keynote)offers a wide range of system fonts. The choiceis really great, both for Cyrillic and Latin alphabets.
This amount is enough to choose something suitable and original. You may wonder why people buy or download fonts if everything is already in there ?!Here is why: there are so many fonts in the systemso that each user could pick one that suits his language. For example, some fonts on the list only consist of symbols,or only hieroglyphs. They are in the minority, but therearen't many Cyrillic fonts either. And they are important for us.
If you are in luck and you come across a standard Cyrillic font that works well for you, do not rush into using it.
Often when choosing one of the standard fonts, we are sure that personwe send this presentation to, will see this font in the same way as we do.That may not always be true. The problem is that only 10% of all standardfonts can be called common, i.e. safe.
BY THE WAY
Many are convinced that Calibri is a safe font, but it does not come
as a system font in Linux or MacOS
.
And now let's play a game. It's simple: below you can see a piece of text, that was typed using safe fonts. How many of them can you spot? Good luck!
There are 10 fonts in there. Six more remained behind the scenes — they stand out much more, but I'll show them a little later. Between some of these ten there is practically no difference. If you scale them to the same size, it is unlikely that you will find even five.
Such an illustrative example once again proves that the use of non-standard fonts is an important design tool that will make your slides unique.
But if you still choose to use the safe fonts, then I'll give a couple of tips that once helped me on using some of them.
A couple of safe fonts and some facts about them
Font for every day
A fun fact — it was created as a copy of Helvetica, one of the most favourite fonts of designers, but most of the non-designers can't tell them apart.
Below are several examples of Arial's use in real life.
For daily tasks.
This one is a font that was created for an on-screen display. Unlike Arial, I see it as a more soft and pleasant font. Just like Arial it works for anything.
I compared them for clarity.
Modern geometric font.
I advise you to use it moderately.
In the publishing industry, at first, it was a replacement for Arial, since it required 30% less ink. However, the publishers later noticed that Century Gothic consumes more paper so they didn't save much.
The difference between them is obvious, but I'll still demonstrate it:
Well suited for both display and modern printing.
This is a favorite font of the second half of the XX century advertisers. It has distinctive slab serifs, which make it more expressive. This is an old-style font, it suits well for writing slogans like "time tested quality".
It can serve as a replacement for Times New Roman, although they are both indisputably
good when used appropriately.
Elegant font. Emphasizes reliability and expensiveness.
All American editions of Harry Potter books were typed in the 12th point size of this font. Only the fifth book was typed in 11.5 point size, which aroused the readers' indignation and JK Rowling returned everything back into place in the next edition.
Fonts that can be easily distinguished from one another
Everything is much easier here. Most likely, you will recognize five fonts.
You already know some of these guys. Of course, it's rather difficult not to recognize Comic Sans, and we see Impact almost daily, because this is the main language of motivators and memes. But are they suitable for presentations? What rules should we follow in order to use them well? Let's find out.
It's all clear.
This is black and bold weight of Arial. It is suitable for headings or very weighty messages. It's not difficult to see the difference between them.
Bold and condensed font for headings.
The most popular font of motivators. It really fits well there. Most likely, you have seen it quite often.
Do not use.
A very notorious font. It's difficult to say anything else about it. I would not advise you to use it in presentations.
That's how famous logos would look like if they were typed in Comic Sans font
Not suitable for body text.
If you are dealing with programming, you should have already become related to it by now. It gradually becomes substituted by Consolas. But if you want to show the font style of a typewriter in the presentation, for example, to insert a picture of an envelope and write an address on it, this font is the best for the job. Sometimes it is used very unexpectedly and that can work.
Courier New is on the bottom card
Well suited for references and footnotes.
It remains readable even in very small sizes.
Representative of monospaced fonts. Notepad users could see it in Windows 2000 to 8, because it was a default font there.
The name of the font contains the word Console, because it was designed to write software codes. Shows the style of the typewriter as well as Courier.
Usually these fonts are enough for daily presentations, but if you need something special, a new, extraordinary font - such a modest list will not allow us to do without other fonts. In the next part, we'll just talk about them. And I'll tell you where to look for them, how to choose and how to use them.
